short leg Can't Post

Hello-

I have a new yoga practitioner in class. She has attempted yoga before, but always becomes frustrated with her limitations. She has a bad hip, scoliosis, and a leg which is 1 1/2 inches shorter than the other. I have found resources to help her with the scoliosis, and I am comfortable modifying for her hip, but I am not sure how to address the short leg. Our first class is mostly about establishing a good Tadasana, which is very difficult for her. Any tips on how to work through this limitation?

I am aware of the importance of practicing in bare feet, but she asked if she might be better practicing in her shoes with the lift to compensate for her misalignment.

Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

Hi

I guess that the short leg of your student comes from her bad hip and her scoliosis. Check the leg length when the hip points are even! I have learned that there are very few people who really have a short leg. I suggest that you work with her on her scoliosis and on even hip points and eventually the short leg will get better.

My opinion is that if you let her practice with her shoes that would contribute to her “bad alignment”. I know many doctors recommend shoe lifts but that doesn’t make alignment better or easier! Check also Elise Browning Miller’s site http://www.yogaforscoliosis.com. All the best to you and your student!
