Hi Jole, I have a similar problem and I am an Iyengar yoga teacher. I had to have exams a few months ago with this knee pain (inner meniscus issue which I was told by the doctor needs surgery when it becomes unbearable). I was recommended to always use props till it has improved so I don't give up with trying to improve it with the right yoga poses using props and strenghtening muscles around it.
You have to stop padmasana for a while until your knee gets better that is what I have been told my many senior teachers - don't push your luck and listen to your body.
Practice using props preparatory padmasana poses but especially always as a warm up sit on your knees with feet and knees completely together (use a belt to keep feet together) and place a rolled up blanket behind your knees (create space first like you prepare for Virasana sitting). Do this every day for at least 10 mins and stretch feet and inner legs in this position again to fortify muscles around the problem.
My knee problem has been caused by a too tight hip as I forced on the knee when doing padmasana. It helps to try and understand how did you cause your knee issue for the healing process.

Later on if you want I can send you a sequence for regain padmasana.

I hope this helps,
namaste'

Hello Jole,

here is the padmasana preparation sequence as promised. As I said earlier I would anyway go very slow with practicing padmasana and invest more time into healing the knee, as knee problems don't heal so easily as we would like them to do and if we keep pushing in the wrong direction you might end up needing surgery....be careful.

PADMASANA preparation sequence

  1. Adhomukha Vrkasana
  2. Pincha Mayurasana
  3. Utthita Padangusthasana (leg higher than usual + bending forward)
  4. Raja Kapotasana
  5. Urdhva Prasarita Eka Padasana
  6. Ardha Baddha Padmottanasana
  7. Ardha Baddha Paschimottanasana
  8. Marichyasana II
  9. Parivritta Janu Sirsasana
  10. Upavistha Konasana (sideways)
  11. Parivritta (sideways)
  12. Parivritta Paschimottanasana
  13. Supta Padangustasana II
  14. Sukasana (bending forwards)
  15. Sukasana (foot on knee – to prepare put one foot in front of opposite knee)
  16. Padmasana
  17. Padmasana (lying on the back)
  18. Padmasana (lying on the front)
  19. Sirsasana
  20. Sarvangasana
  21. Savasana
