Varicous veins Can't Post

Hello.. I seem to be getting new varicous veins every week. I have researched poses that are helpful in treating/preventing them, but I am worried about whether certain variations of classical poses (or particular uses of props in classic poses for medical reasons, for example) encourage the development of this problem. Does anyone have any advice ??

Hello,

Which variations on classical poses are you referring to? I share your concern as I am also developing varicose veins.

Stella Weller's book "Yoga Therapy" says that sun salutations are contraindicated for varicose veins. I used to do 12 sun salutes per day, and I think that's when the spider veins started showing up.

But now that I am practicing Iyengar-style, I wonder if the long standing pose sequences (many standing poses performed in succession) could also encourage varicose veins.

Sorry that I'm not able to answer your questions.

Hello,

Thanks for responding. I read in the new Iyengar book (Yoga:The Path to Holistic Health) that sitting up high on blankets to do Dandasana and forward bends should be avoided by people with varicous veins, for example. It was just mentioned under the cautions, I believe, but it made me curious about what other types of variations could irritate the problem. Since the problem comes from overworked veins that are trying to pump blood back to the heart, inversions must be helpful, since they reverse the direction and decrease the work, and virasana is also supposed to be excellent. (I fear that the problem is also just simply genetic). I am not sure if the standing poses increase the chance of developing more varicous veins, but in theory it does seem possible. I have incorporated the session from Iyengar's new book that is for varicous veins into my weekly practice. I try to do it once a week.I figure that then I am helping out those tired veins on a regular basis, and that should help to balance out work from poses that create stress for the problem.

I 'd be happy to hear more about what you know or find out in regards to this problem. Also, if anyone else has advice, I am all ears.

Nameste.

I advise my students to do supta dandasana (legs up the wall pose, thighs belted) and viparita karani when they complain of this issue. They get relief from these passive semi-inversions.
