Sciatica Pain Can't Post

For the last 6 months i am suffering sciatica pain in my left leg due to disc herniation in L4/L5. I have the following questions
1) Would my condition worsen wherein i won't be able to move my leg ?
2) What are the asanas should i perform in order to cure

Have you spoken with your teacher? This can get worse. It can get better. Supported Hasta Padangusthasana and Supta Padangusthasana may be the ticket. With the standing version the foot/lower leg must be supported and the root of the thigh lengthened away from the hip (strong traction). With the supine version also support the foot/lower leg and traction at the root of the thigh isn't a bad idea. Hold the poses for 3 minutes or more.
Again, have you spoken with your teacher? Always the best resource.

Re: Sciatica Pain [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

For how long do you have that herniation of disc L4-L5-did it appear by a chronic process after years, or did you have accident. And how long do you do yoga-which school?
It should get better by a correct exercise, but it takes time, like everything needs it s time, and lot s of patience. For this it s important to work a lot with opening the loins (articulatio coxae) and lots of work with lower back and whole backbone-stretching it in active way. As already mentioned, supta padandusthasana and so on, there are also other variable "preparation" exercises for opening loins and all this part. Those are special ones, not at books as asanas, you experience it at practical classes of yoga in iyengar way. Many other exercises are asanas in different variations with props. The best way is to consult it with yoga teacher, because he knows you, and also can show you what to do how, in your case, how much is enough and safe to go into asana for you, which props to use, which variation of asana to do, also how each can follow the another. After certain time you will find out your own way what kind of "sets of exercises" when you will use-you will feel it naturally. It s imporatnt to be careful by doing twists and backbends especially-always having the lower back under the control when doing this. It s important to repeat some of those "basic" exercises and asanas every day, do do it regularly-than it brings the effect. Beginnings in solving such a problem seem always difficult to a person who goes through such a process. Experiencing also lots of pain. It s also important to distinguish the pain, which is "good or normal pain" in the process of exercise and the pain which tells you, you are doing something wrong, that you are close to harm some place on your body. All the process of healing this goes in cycles, I guess you have discovered it already. Once you feel being high, once down there somewhere... But when you do yoga regularly, you will see the difference, that everything goes to better, but takes time-different for everybody...it depends on many factors...sometimes we are not able to see it all...

Good Luck

Namaste

Re: Sciatica Pain [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for your reply at iyengar forum. I suppose you have already gone through the pain which i am going through currently. To tell you the history, it would be nearly 1 year next month for my pain. When i use to walk for a long time or stand for a long time i use to get pain in my left leg. The pain increased with period, finally last year around october the MRI confirmed of me having slip disc (L5-S1 disc herniation). I was on traction for 15 days in hospital. It helped me a bit for a small time. I was then recommended physio therapy which i continued. I was expecting miracles over night so i started looking at other options. So i joined Iyengar yoga and to my surprise i was made to do bending stretching exercise. On the contrary i was strictly advices by my doctor that i should not be bending nor lifting weights. I continued iyengar yoga for 1 month. I stopped it since there was no improvement and i was not sure whether i should be doing bending exercises. Early June this year again i took an MRI and the status was same as it was 9 months back when the first MRI was taken. The doctor recommended surgery since i have lot of life to live and how long can i keep bearing the pain. For me surgery is the last resort, only when i won't be able to move my leg. Currently i go to office and do my daily work. I have no problems sitting or sleeping, only standing and walking i have problems. Currenly i get pain from my left buttock upto the thigh. The nerve seems to be pressed and i can feel as if someone is holding my left leg. I practice yoga at home daily. I do shalbhasan, bhujangasan, pavanmuktasan, ardhachakrasan. Even doing these asanas i get pain but i bear it. I try doing Supta Padangusthasana using the belt but cannot lift the leg more than 60 degrees. If i keep the position for more than 10 seconds i can feel the pain of the nerve in my lower back. So i am not sure whether i should be doing it or not. I suppose the most important thing is patience for me. I need to give time for what i am doing and as correctly said by miracles won't happen overnight. I would like you to give me your valuable advice and direction. Sometimes out of frustation i feel like going for surgery but it would be last resort. I hope you understand my scenario and i look upon you for direction. Awaiting your response Thanks and Warm Regards Kiran
