Hello:
My husband and I are new to yoga, we are 26 and 30 years old, we have been pretty healthy throughout our lives, we really don't drink(exept on especial occasions), we don't smoke. we are trying to cultivate good eating habits, we like everything, we have tried reading on ayurveda but its kind of complicated, so we are looking for help and tips, like how should we eat? when? at what times? what about before class? or after class? what does the iyengar instructors recommend? what kinds of food should we avoid etc etc. Please help, any comment will be appreciated.

I suppose in diet what one should look for is nutritious light (sattvic) food that doesn't leave one feeling heavy after consumption. I myself am a vegan as I try to observe ahimsa(non-violence) in my life, and feel that meat and dairy are tamasic(dull,heavy) foods. Diet I think is tricky and while there are things which are clearly detrimental to health and things which are beneficial, an individuals make-up needs to be considered. So I suppose what I'm saying is that as in asana you need to observe the effect that certain types of food have on you.
I leave a space of at least 2 hours after meals before doing Asana. Asana is best performed on an empty stomach but not so much that hunger becomes a distraction. I find for me to have a glass of juice in the morning half an hour to an hour before asana practice is the best. Light foods of course are best after asana, soup being good in afternoon or evening.

Try "Healing with Natural Foods" by Paul Pitchford. Great book on Eastern & Western thoughts on nutrion and includes easy to make and yummie recipes in the back. My eating habits have changed dramatically since I first purchased this book...and I read it often as a reference.
