breathing through the nose Can't Post

Why *exactly* are we advised to breathe through the nose rather than the mouth when practicing the asanas?

As my pranayama has developed the nasal breathing has developed naturally during the asanas.
In LoY p59 - the bit about breathing, 14. "In all the asanas, the breathing should be done through the nostrils only and not through the mouth"
The nasal passage is smaller than the mouth passage so the level of control during the asanas will steady the mind and in turn the asana.
A runner athlete is more prone to breath through his mouth for the high uptake of oxygen needed in the body
whereas in Yoga, calmness and sensitivity to concentrate inward and adjust correctly which we can achieve when we breathe through the nose.

Thank you for your reply. I *thought* themain reason was simply because nasal breathing can be controlled more easily than mouth breathing, but I also wondered if there were other more esoteric reasons having to do with the nadis, etc.

If you have Light on Pranayama page 32 their is a chapter on Nadi and chakras its a really good read.
The nadi functioning along with the bronchioli and air sacs which are the alvioli in the lungs.
A diffusion takes place between the pulmonary artery and the air sacs, we breathe out our carbon dioxide which are the toxins and we breathe breathe in oxygen.
It is here that the chemical reaction transforms into energy which is carried around the body via the red blood cells.
The larger artery and veins that run up and down the spine are the larger channels of nadi that run from the naval ,to the heart and up to the brain and the many other thousands travel to every smallest area of the body possible through the smaller capillaries.
The siva samhita says we have 350,000 nadis running through the body.
The nadis tubular vessels contain red blood cells that carry the oxygen and carbon dioxide white blood cells that carry our genetic information and water + nutrients that the body needs.
You have encouraged me to read more about nadis
thanx myka
