Sirsasana support under the shoulder blades Can't Post

I've heard about a wooden prop which operates like two broom handles under the top of each shoulder in sirsasana - its not the equivalent of doing a headstand on two viparati karani boxes under the shoulders because all the weight is still taken by the forearms and the head as in normal sirsasa. What it does is to teach how to lift the shoulders (AWAY from the broom handles/whatever).

Does anyone know where I can get one? (I heard about it from an Australian friend but I'm based in the UK)

Thanks

Zoë

Hello Zoe,
We actually have them at the yoga studio I go to in Australia. I will find out from my teacher where he got them from though I think he got them some time ago. From memory (I have never used them) they are just to wooden sticks about 50-80cm long bolted together through the centre to make an X shape.

Take two strong rods (about 1" thick and 2-3 feet long). Place a mat or a blanket on the floor in front of a stool/chair placed against a wall. Place the rods slanting from the floor on to the edges of the stool. The rods will form a triangle with the base on the blankets, head with apart (and aprox 10 inches away from the stool, though this distance may vary according to the person) and the apex, the point where the rods are meeting, against the stool. Kneel in front of the rods, bend the elbows on the outside of the triangle and rest the forearms on the floor. Interlock the hands so that the knuckles are below the apex. Fit the head between the rods and place the crown of the head on the floor. See that the trapezius muscles just tuch the rods. Then lift the knees and take yourself up into Sirsasana. See that the rods do not slip from their position. (c) Yoga Rahasya Vol. B
