Props - weights Can't Post

Hello everybody!

Does anybody know how much the weights are used in Iyengar yoga? Their must be some of differents sizes. Are they the same weight lifters use for their dumbbells?

Thank you very much!

Rita

Re: Props - weights [In reply to] Can't Post

hi rita !
one of the most popular use of weight is for supta virasana, i personnally use a 20kg disc (the one in use in gymnasium) , which is the usual weight for such an exercise; i put it on my legs while my back lies on a blanket ; and i do it for 5 mn. One thing is for sure : NEVER try a weight exercise without having done it first with a teacher Shocked; you can really hurt yourself if you make a mistake. Even with my teacher advice , i had a problem because i tried a tiny little modificiation on the exercise : a smaller blanket than usual under my back Unimpressed ... well ,i was fine until the next morning when i woke up Crazy : i walked like a duck for a week and had to use yoga ropes for restorative exercises beacuse my sacro-iliacs where inflamed Pirate... now i do the same exercise again until a can do it porperly without any weight. a last thing : don't worry, it is a very pleasant sensation to have that weight, much more relaxing that trying to put your knees on the floor in supta virasan without it Laugh
take care

Thank you, Pascal, for your reply! Do you think that the same amount of weight is used for the thighs in Savasana? I wanted to use a weight for the strap jacket for shoulder traction, but I think 20 kg would be definitly to much Wink. But that would definitly lead me to learn drop-backs Laugh. I think the weight used for shoulder traction would be around 5 kgs.

So, thank you again, Pascal, also for your advice! I hope you are ok. now!

Namaste Rita

hello rita Smile
as i said, it is only with the advice of your teacher , the one who knows your practice; that you can reasonably use weights. i only use weights for supta virasana, about savasana, i have some doubt about the use of heavy weights; anyway, be careful with your shoulders, it is definately not an area to play with Crazy; sorry , but i cannot give a smart advice to you about your questionUnsure
have a nice summer (very hot in paris Crazy)
