Marichyasana I

Can't Post

Hi all, I have been attempting Marichyasana I in my home practice for awhile now and cannot *bend forward*. Can anyone help? Let's see: I can fully twist and even clasp the hands in the beginning steps of this pose (I am also able to fully twist into Marichyasana III). As for forwarding bending, I am generally very flexible: I can take my hands past my feet (with good alignment) in all the other basic seated forward bends. One other forward bend which is challenging is Krauncasana, and even there I feel progresss, like there is room to move towards the final pose. So, here I am in the initial stages of Marichyasana I. I am sitting upright with both legs in their proper positions and arms extended behind my back with the hands clasped. I cannot in any way bend forward. I try to bend outward and foward towards the extended foot, using the principles of forward bending, and nothing will budge! I feel stuck by the arm clasp. A couple guesses: 1. I don't understand how to ben forward without my arms helping to pull me outward and forward. In most forward bends, this is a natural extension of the hands clasping the feet. I don't understand how to get that communion of the tummy and the thighs without the arms guiding the process. 2. I know that I am very inflexible in the hips, in terms of lateral rotation with poses like padmasana. 3. Is the bent knee supposed to *move forwards* towards the extended foot somewhat, with the torso? If so, it could be shin / ankle inflexibility on my part - have to practice those squats! So, any tips or tricks for Marichyasana One? Is there anyone on the board who can accomplish the full pose, but who initially had the same type of difficulties, and how did you work through it? best regards, emily
